I came to New York to visit a few art directors and see if I could really hustle like an illustrator. One of the places I visited was the New York Times when Leanne Shapton was still there. The day before I left, she asked me to do the Letters piece, and that was my first encounter with the real illustration world. Someone gave me money to do what I wanted to do, and it was amazing.
